“Calming” Substance Phenibut Declared Forbidden by USEF

LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Sept. 8, 2015–The “calming” substance Phenibut (β-phenyl gamma aminobutyric acid) has been declared a forbidden substance by the U.S. Equestrian Federation.

The USEF described Phenibut a “problematic substance” that is considered a derivative of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). The substance has been found in a product called “Focus Calm” supplied by Uckele.

“There are no known scientific studies documenting its safety in horses and there are no known legitimate therapeutic purposes for this substance to be used in the horse,” the USEF said in declaring the substance forbidden, effective immediately.
