Five Phases Farm: Sönke Rothenberger On Cosmo In Grand Prix Debut 2nd Behind Isabell Werth & Don Johnson in Peterhof CDI4*

PERL-BORG, Germany, Sept. 10, 2015–Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo making the eight-year-old gelding’s senior Big Tour debut were edged out of victory by the slimmest of margins by multi Olympian Isabell Werth on Don Johnson at the Peterhof CDI4* Grand Prix Thursday.

Isabell and Don Johnson, the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding she rode for Germany at last month’s European Championships, scored 77.240 per cent for the fifth victory in 17 starts this year.

Sönke and Cosmo at 77.140 per cent for second place were just 0.1 percentage points behind Isabell and Don Johnson.

Three of the five judges put Sönke and the KWPN gelding in first place and two placed the pair second while two gave the top spot to Isabell and Don Johnson.and three had them second. Scores for the young German combination ranged from a high of 80.400 per cent to a low of 73.700 per cent while the five-time Olympic pair were awarded a high of 80.300 per cent and a low of 74.300 per cent.

Patrik Kittel on the Australian-owned Delaunay, a nine-year-old Oldenburg gelding, was third on 73.600 per cent.

Sönke, who does not turn 21 years of age until next month, has been competing Cosmo internationally since Young Riders in February, 2014. The pair was showing in the Under-25 division less than three months ago, a competition where the rider was also competing in international jumping. At the 2014 European Championships, the duo led Germany to team gold with first place individually.

Sönke described as “sensational” the “very special feeling” in Cosmo’s ride.

Isabell heard the result of her young compatriot before she rode Don Johnson into the area.

“I just thought: ‘Now, let’s not overdo it with the youngsters ‘,” she laughed. “That gave me extra motivation.”
